Waddling Gentoos

We spotted this group of Gentoo Penguins (Pygoscelis papua) on New Island in the Falklands on December 19th, 2024 as they were making their way down a penguin highway between a hilltop rookery and the beach. I was quite surprised at how far from the shore some of these Gentoo colonies were. In this case, they had somewhere close to a quarter of a mile to waddle between the water and their nesting site.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/6.3
  • Camera: OM-1
  • Focal length: 400mm
  • ISO: 400
  • Shutter speed: 1/1000s
