Preening Cormorant

The first bird colony we visited on New Island (on December 19th) was home to a large number of Imperial Cormorants (Leucocarbo bransfieldensis) including this one which was diligently preening as I took a bunch of pictures of it. These birds have multiple names including King Cormorant, Blue-Eyed Cormorant and Antarctic Cormorant, and all variations can also substitute “Shag” for “Cormorant”.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/6.3
  • Camera: OM-1
  • Focal length: 400mm
  • ISO: 1250
  • Shutter speed: 1/2000s
